Customer Review: Doesn’t print from outside applications
Just bought and installed the QL-1050 on my system so I could hopefully run UPS and FedEx and Priority Mail 4×6″ thermal shipping labels for our daily outbound shipments. Only to find that this printer only prints from within it’s own Ptouch Editor software application. While it’s true that you can copy and paste text (like addresses) from other outside applications back into the Brother software, you can’t simply print a label created at websites like UPS.com or Fedex.com or USPS.com.

Copying a complete label from UPS or FedEx or USPS and pasting it as an image into the Brother software results in such a low-resolution printout that you can barely read the addresses or the barcodes.

In fairness, the text and lines typed and printed from within the Brother software do print out in crisp 300 dpi output exactly as promised.

This printer doesn’t act like a laser or ink jet printer and print anything you send to it (it simply stops printing instead each time you try to print from outside the Brother software). The documentation in the manual and on the Brother website doesn’t clearly cover this, but instead focuses on creating a label from scratch in their software by drawing lines and boxes and typing text and barcodes each time or saving it as a template, which sort of answers the question in reverse that they don’t support printing from outside by ignoring or avoiding it. That won’t work with UPS or FedEx or USPS labels.

We can accidentally or on purpose send anything to our standalone Dymo 400 Turbo lablewriter and it will print, but unfortunately that company is currently limited to 2×4″ labels.

Customer Review: Horrible network performance, very poor software.
We bought one for our office, and proceeded to waste a lot of time trying to get it to print as a network printer. Brother’s software is bug-ridden, and didn’t install cleanly on any of our Windows machines. And online support is a joke. This printer worked fine on one machine, but is a terrible waste of time for network printing. You can’t simply set this up as a regular printer, but must go through Brother’s proprietary software for every print. A real pain.
Customer Review: Great Printer–Really Badly Designed Software
At one time, the QL-550 was my favorite label printer, mostly because I liked its print quality better than DYMO’s. When I upgraded to Mac OS X Leopard, however, I ran into problems. Installing Brother’s “Leopard-compatible” driver and label software worked fine, and the label printer worked great. Unfortunately, installing the Brother software “broke” around 20 of my previously installed programs, including Microsoft Office 2008, Logic Pro, and Adobe Creative Suite CS3. I don’t know if reinstalling each of these programs after installing the Brother software will work, as I don’t have the patience to hassle with it. I’m instead doing a complete reinstall of my main hard drive’s contents (pre-Brother) from Time Machine.

This is a great printer, but until Brother comes up with software installers that don’t cause problems for other installed programs, I can’t recommend this printer for Mac users.

Customer Review: Network Printer
After I spent some minutes to get the unit installed and running, just to find the unit won’t do network print. It disconnects itself whenever it went into sleep mode. Submit a new job will not bring the machine out of sleep mode. I could not find any information in the manual that describe a solution.

Update on 6/23/08: I had the chance to talk to Brother Tech support and was able to resolve the problem after reinstalling drivers. The printer now respond to network printing. Since it is working, I would raise the rating to 3 stars, but I could not do it for some reason that Amazon does not allow change of rating. The printer prints well and and makes copies. The print quality is substantially improved compared with older models made by Brother, but not as good as you can find on other brands of color laser or even dry ink jet printers. It is also a slower printer after first page. For the low price I paid, I certainly would not expect beyond what the product delivers. It is a machine with good performance per cost ratio.
Customer Review: Excellent addition to our office
The Brother DCP-9045CDN (the listed model number was incorrectly stated as DCP-9045CDW at the time of this writing) is a very well designed color laser printer/scanner/copier with impressive built-in networking and duplex capabilities.

First, it performs very nicely as a network color laser printer. It uses four toner cartridges (black, yellow, cyan, & magenta) that are easily accessed via a simple sliding drawer at the front of the unit. The toner cartridges are available in standard-capacity and high-capacity. While it is a little disappointing that the machine ships with the standard-capacity cartridges, this seems to be the ‘norm’ in the printer industry. However, I recommend purchasing the high-capacity cartridges when it is time to replenish your supplies, since they are a better value.

The machine comes with a 250-sheet standard paper tray as well as a 50-sheet “Multi-purpose” paper tray that folds down from the front of the unit. Many printers that we have used in the past also had one of these “multi-purpose”-type trays, but they usually amounted to nothing more than a single sheet manual feeder or an envelope feeder; we like the fact that this one holds 50 sheets and can actually be used as a second paper tray. We also purchased the optional 500-sheet paper tray so that we can have plain paper, letterhead, and labels loaded at the same time. The unit can use legal size paper in addition to letter size.

We really love the built-in duplex feature, and it is one of the main reasons that we purchased this model, as it saves us a ton on paper costs. We found that the prices of machines with built-in duplex capabilities (especially color models) were typically substantially higher than machines without duplex, and, initially, we didn’t think we could afford a color laser with duplex. However, the 9045CDN was surprisingly within our budget.

As for network printing, this machine has very robust network support. It supports TCP/IP v4 as well as TCP/IP v6, which means its network capabilities should be about as future-proof as possible. The 9045CDN supports peer-to-peer type networks as well as server-based networks, and the included software and setup guide make it very easy to setup the unit to work with either type of network. The machine includes drivers for Windows 2000, Windows XP (32-bit & 64-bit), Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 (32-bit & 64-bit), and Mac OS X 10.2.4 (or greater.)

Second, this machine not only scans, but it is actually a network scanner. We looked at several other network printers that had scanning capabilities, but most of them could only scan to a single computer through a USB cable - their network capabilities were limited to printing only. However, the 9045CDN can scan directly to any computer that is attached to our network! In addition, it can scan directly to an FTP server on the network or on the Internet. The automatic document feeder is very handy and this machine will even perform duplex scanning and copying! The scanner glass is large enough for legal size paper; however, the automatic feeder only supports up to letter size paper, so legal size documents must be scanned or copied one at a time.

Beyond network printing and scanning, the 9045CDN, of course, has the obligatory USB port on the rear so that you can attach the machine directly to a single computer rather than to a network. There are also several nice features that allow you to use the machine without even having to boot up any computers. For instance, you can print directly from or scan directly to a USB memory key (i.e. flash drive, etc.); just plug your flash drive into the USB port on the front of the machine, and print your documents and pictures that are stored on the flash drive. You can also attach a PictBridge compatible camera to the machine and print your photos without a computer. The machine also works great as a standalone color copier.

We were able to replace two non-network monochrome laser printers, a color inkjet multifunction printer/scanner, and a copier with one 9045CDN. For most of our printing/copying we use the 9045CDN in black and white mode, but when we need color it is there, and it is substantially less expensive per page to print in color than the color inkjet printer that this unit replaced. We are very pleased with this unit.

Customer Review: Print quality good, but paper feed/jamming issues
I’ve had one of these on my secretary’s desk for less than two years. Initially it worked fine. Good print quality for text, which is 99% of what we print. About six months later, my secretary started getting paper jams. They became more frequent over time. Last week, the machine stopped feeding paper, both from the paper tray and the one-sheet-at-a-time slot. What would happen is that the paper feed mechanism would start and then abruptly stop before the sheet of paper was fully loaded. I have been unable to fix it, and am about to trash the unit.

Granted, the purchase price for this printer is very low ($50-60; ditto for the model that replaced it), and the print quality is good. I would recommend it only for low-volume printing.

By the way, Brother Cust. Service was of little help re the “does not feed” issue; they ultimately told my secretary to take the printer to a repair shop. Sure. It would cost me more for a repair estimate than it would cost to buy a brand new unit.

Some machines are designed and built in such a way as to be bullet-proof. They work well out of the box and continue working well for many years with little or no maintenance, e.g., HP4, IBM Selectric (okay, I’m dating myself), most Toyotas, etc. The HL-2040 is the exact opposite. It is not a durable machine and is destined for an early trip to the recycler/landfill.
Customer Review: Semi Dispossable Printer
This is the second 2040 I’ve had, 1st one lasted about a year (paid $150 for it) before the drum went. Drum costs more than printer at local stores. Bought a new one for $100 (new drum, new catridge), again it’s lasted just over a year and the drum light is on again. So I’m shopping again. Money wise I got my money’s worth and it worked fine all year. Environment wise I don’t like dumping these in the landfill because they can’t make a drum that’ll last longer than a year, or at least provide a cost effective replacement.

Customer Review: SO glad I bought this!!
I purchased this for my voice studio. It’s a little big BUT I needed it. I spent so much time running to Kinko’s doing photocopies for studio recitals, or copying music for students until their order came in (because after all, I don’t want to violate copyright!) and I needed something that could reduce and duplex. This fits the bill. And I’ve networked it so I can use it from my desktop upstairs or from the notebook I have attached. I’ve only had it a month, but so far, so good!
Customer Review: Pretty good, but the paper curl is a problem
As a public high school teacher, making copies at school takes a long time–the waiting lines and the non-collating abilities of the school’s old machines were problematic. I bought this multifunction machine to function strictly as a copier for my house. After wasting hours of time photocopying and collating multi-page short stories and assignments, I thought that this machine would be money well spent considering the time I would save.

The copying functions are stellar–it is relatively fast and the high-yield toner is set at a reasonable price. Because I live in a house with 5 other teachers, the expenses surrounding the machine are relatively low.

However, the printer has a propensity to curl copies upwards–even at settings and paper recommended by the manufacturer. Basically, if you have any ambitions to set up a copying and job and let it run without monitoring it, you should look at another option. After about 30 or 40 pages, the curled pages begin to run into the output pages, causing some pretty severe paper jams. Because of this paper curling, I find myself constantly monitoring the machine so the curled paper doesn’t get in the way.

A second problem is that the machine only comes with 32MB of RAM…so while the loading slot can hold up to 50 pages, it can only do 8 pages at a time before the memory runs out. Trying to buy new RAM is also a hassle because the suggested manufacturer provided in the manual changed their product codes so it is difficult to determine if the RAM you buy will match.

Do I regret buying this machine? No, not at all–I have saved hours of paper-sorting time because of the purchase. However, if I were to go back and choose a machine again, I might consider buying something with less problems than this one.
